Aidan Williamson, just another Police Scotland constable in a tiny Highlands hamlet, is plucked from his routine life into a case of murder most foul. Still wincing from the wounds of a recent separation, Aidan keeps his emotional life tucked in his trousers, out of sight, until he encounters Kenneth Logan—a man in self-isolation at Devil’s Point. There’s a secret buried in those soul-deep eyes.

How long before the rookie detective gives in to his almost sensual attraction to all that’s profoundly mystifying? And who will survive the killing field in a place Scots call The Demon’s Penis?

From Chapter 9, "The Stand"

He and a crazy-ass Scot had become partners, bloody damn partners, in the space of one short and endless morning.

They stood, close together, where anyone could see from the open door. Logan traced his jawline, then left a finger on his open mouth.

“I need tae remember ye.”

He tasted the finger. “You’ll see me again. Too soon.”

“Maybe. I no longer take chances… My little fire.”

“You said that a while ago. I don’t get it.”

“Your name. Didnae your mama tell ye? It’s a good Scottish name, like my own.”

“My father’s a Brit. Barely tolerated Scotland. I guess she knew it was best to keep it to herself. And what about your name?”

He smiled. “A deep rough hollow. Maybe my heart, who knows?”

“I think of Wolverine. Adamantium for bones, a granite pillar.”

“Like the devil’s own point?”

“Aye. Exactly like that.”

Logan drew him close to his groin and spoke in his ear. “The front door is wide open.”

“So?”

“So I have a bad reputation to maintain.”

“The bachelor mountain man?”

“Something like that, lad.”

Aidan cupped his face. “Then take me where the sun don’t shine.”

“Excuse me?”

“Americans say that. It means something naughty. Figure it out.”

“I just did. When do you need to leave?”

“Later."

“The towel is no longer available.”

“Fantastic. Take me back to your room.”

Glad to see more of Aidan after meeting him in the Nevada Highlander series. I definitely want to know more of his back story and read more of him and his "mountain man"! Erin's writing is beautiful and very visual. She makes it easy to see the places in Scotland she describes. Can't wait for book 2!

New Hero

One thing you can count on when you open a book by Erin O'Quinn is that her main character is set up perfectly for your sympathetic reaction to his life, as well as providing an immediate impression that he has the moxie to become a hero.

In Aidan Williamson she has handed us not only a hunk-on-the-cover but a young man with a quick mind and sharp but usually discreet mouth. That combination helps us through a fast-moving adventure through the hills and mountains and valleys in search of clues as to how a young, experienced, bagger (backpacking hiker) met a mysterious and probably illegal demise in a bothy (something like a hut with bare amenities).

The set up between young Aidan and his Police Scotland superiors is exceptionally well handled and Aidan's overly eager plunge into the mystery--and his quick reaction to potential embarrassment--give us a gut warming insight into this tall lanky fellow.

How Aidan comes to put pieces together is very cleverly handled as is his encounter with what might be called a park ranger by name of Kenneth Logan--a big bear cub of a man whose cloistered life begins to crumble when he encounters this snarky, but determined, undercover agent.

Ms. O'Quinn might do very well by expanding this series in the future, but even if she doesn't, this is a perky, delicious, adventurous read that is more than down and dirty--it's delightful.

This is the first work with Aidan as the central character. It becomes a series only if the author writes a sequel...or two. It's definitelty a stand-alone, and any subsequent mysteries will naturally build from here while remaining stand-alones.

About the Author

Erin O'Quinn was born almost literally on the side of a mountain in Nevada and was hauled kicking and screaming into the nearest town, fifty miles away, to attend first grade. To this day, she claims to be kindergarten-deprived.

O'Quinn earned a few degrees from the University of So. California, but her real education began on the back docks of the Las Vegas (NV) Review-Journal newspaper; on the good-old-boy car lots in Abilene, TX where she sold new Chryslers and used cars; and in a big-box store in Austin, TX where she alternately hauled pallets and ran a garden center.

You'll find a lot of action-adventure, and a character-centered, plot-centered group of seven series and a few stand-alones

Of 46 published works for adults, 33 (I think) are in the gay lit (M/M) genre. From the Noble Dimensions series (small town/contemporary) to Old World Ireland, Jacobite-era  and modern Scotland; and back to the retro world of Ireland in the Roaring 20s, she says, "My men, and my settings, are no-frills, no hearts and flowers. But I think a certain nobility and even spiritual element often creep in among the honest sexual feelings."

Any reviews you see are unsolicited, and are always welcome.

Settle back, enjoy what Erin O'Quinn calls "literotica with a flare for the unusual...thoughtful and plotful...men with passions too big for their britches."
